Big demand: Adjustable suspension kits for SUV. KW Variant 4 coilover suspension kit now available for BMW X5M and BMW X6M

The majority of SUVs are driven on paved roads rather than off-road. Accordingly, the demand for exclusive alloys, height-adjustable sports suspensions and other accessories for these vehicles is high in various markets. The KW coilover Variant 4 for the BMW X5M (F95) and BMW X6M (F96) including the 625 hp competition models is part of the suspension manufacturer’s delivery range.

The KW Variant 4 coilover suspension kit has long been available not only for sporty coupés such as the BMW M4, but also for sedans such as the Dodge Charger Hellcat SRT, or for station wagons such as the Audi RS6 Avant. The suspension manufacturer KW automotive also offers this aftermarket suspension for Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs), such as the BMW X5M Competition (F95) and BMW X6M Competition (F96).

The dampers give the two SUVs a high degree of stability in corners even at high speeds. The tendency to roll, which is typical of SUVs and greater than in other cars, is also significantly reduced by the KW suspension.

In addition to the driving dynamics and an advantage in driving safety due to the more precise handling, the suspension dampens much more harmoniously on transverse joints and bumps, and the level of residual comfort is surprisingly high. The combination of 3-way adjustable dampers and the multi-valve technology, which is also used in the BMW M4 GTS standard suspension, makes this possible.

The 3-way adjustable valve technology of the KW Variant 4 enables fine-tuning of damping with 16 clicks in rebound forces, six clicks in low-speed compression (seven characteristic curves), and 15 clicks in high-speed compression (16 characteristic curves). Thereby, the preset tuning of the suspension can be altered to a comfort-oriented road setup with just a few clicks if desired.

When suspension engineers use the terms high-speed and low-speed, they refer to the speed of the piston rod’s movements in the damper. When a wheel goes over a bump, for example, the spring compresses and the piston rod in the damper dips within a few milliseconds. On the other hand, steering movements correspond to low-speed excitations.

Thanks to the multi-valve technology, the suspension harmoniously dampens bumps and transverse joints even at high speeds. In addition, the relatively heavy BMW X5M and BMW X6M SUV benefit from a more noticeable support of the body thanks to the KW suspension.

The BMW X5 M (F95) can be lowered by 25 to 55 millimeters at the front axle and by 20 to 50 millimeters at the rear axle with the KW Variant 4 coilover. For the BMW X6 M (F96), the technical parts certificate specifies a possible lowering range of 20 to 50 millimeters on the front axle and 15 to 45 millimeters on the rear axle due to the body and the spring travel. The 3-way adjustable KW Variant 4 coilover is also available for the BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition.
